With a few hours of quiet ice at Air Canada Centre before the 2016 World Cup of Hockey begins in earnest this weekend, we decided to empty the ol' notebook.After travelling to training camp in Columbus, watching the bulk of Team USA's practices and all of its pre-tournament games leading into this best-on-best tournament, not everything we learned in the dressing room weaseled its way into a column.So here's a collection of 36 stray notes, lost tapes, and loose musings on John Tortorella's real Americans before they open this tourney with a thunderous body check (or seven) on Saturday afternoon.

TORONTO — Winnipeg Jets defenceman Dustin Byfuglien will make his international hockey debut here at Air Canada Centre Tuesday night.Team USA head coach John Tortorella confirmed Tuesday morning Byfuglien will be in the American lineup when the U.S. takes on Canada at the World Cup of Hockey in what is a must-win game for the Americans.Byfuglien will be replacing Columbus Blue Jackets defenceman Jack Johnson in the lineup and Tortorella, who is the Blue Jackets head coach, said Tuesday morning that it "it kills me" to bench one of his NHL players to make room for Byfuglien.

TORONTO — As it turns out, Team USA wasn't as difficult to play against for opponents as it was hard to watch for American fans.Somewhere between it's fast-paced, tenacious performance against Canada in a World Cup of Hockey tune-up in Columbus and Tuesday night's 4-2 setback to the same rival, John Tortorella's club lost its way.Faced with a must-win situation, the Americans didn't generate nearly enough offense or urgency after defenseman Ryan McDonagh staked Team USA to an early 1-0 lead.
